Types of line supports, conductor materials

Types of line support

The support used for transmission and distribution of electrical power must have the following characteristics:-
  • High mechanical strength
  • Light in weight
  • Change in cost
  • Low maintenance cost
  • Longer life
  • Good looking
  • Easily accessible for painting
The line support various types including
  1. Wood
  2. Steel
  3. Reinforced concrete poles
  4. Lattice Steel towers

Wooden poles:-

This supporter cheapest coma easily available, provide insulating properties purpose specially in rural electrification keeping the cost low. These are used to transmit small amount of power at low voltage. They are made seasoned wood of sal or chir.11 metre long with mini circumference of 38 CM at the top and 66 at the bottom used.
Merits
  • Light in weight
  • Cheap and economical
  • It can easily erected.
Demerits
  • Appearance is not good
  • Life is short because they tend to rot.
  • Use is limited upto line voltage of 22 KV.

Steel poles :-

The Steel poles are of three types
  1. Rail poles
  2. Tabular poles
  3. Rolled Steel joists
# the real poles are of the shape of track used for railways.
# tabula polestar of round x section
# rolled Steel joints are of I cross section.
Tabular pause height of 9 to 11 meter are generally used for distribution.
13 metre are used for transmission.
Merits
  • Longer life
  • High mechanical strength
  • Occupy less space
  • Good appearance
Demerits
  • High cost
  • Regular painting is required to give nice Outlook.
  • High cost.

RCC poles :-

This poles are of two types in Shape. One type is of square cross section from bottom to top but sides of a square are decreasing from bottom to top. The other type rectangular bottom and square top with rectangular holes in it to facility the climbing of poles.
Merits
  • Very long life.
  • These give good outlook.
Demerits
  • Initial cost is high
  • Transportation is difficult due to heavy weight.

Lattice Steel towers :-

Thoughthere is no hard and fast rule but wooden poles are generally used for distribution purpose in rural area, the still tabular false and RCC falls are usually used for distribution for purpose in urban area. LatticeSteel tower are used for transmission purpose at 11 KV and 33 KV and broadbase, lattice Steel tower are used for transmission purpose at 66 kv and above. These are is strong and have got longer life.

Difference between single circuit and double circuit

The difference between single circuit and double circuit are

Single circuit design

  • its structure is lighter in weight and required laser foundation because it is subjected to low wind pressure of conductor and structure.
  • There is less danger at the time of repair.
  • Reliability regarding continuity of supply is less.
  • Greater spacing of conductor is required.
  • High reactance due to greater spacing between conductor.

Double circuit design

  • Earth structure is heavier in weight and of more height it is subjected to more wind pressure.
  • There is always danger from the other line circuit.
  • Reliability regarding continuity of supply is more.
  • Lesser spacing of conductor is required.
  • Low reactance due to laser spacing between conductor.

Conductor materials :-

the conductor material used for transmission and distribution of electrical power must have the following characteristics.
  • High conductivity low resistance
  • high tensile strength in order to withstand mechanical stress
  • Low specific gravity in order to give low weight per unit volume
  • Low cost in order to be used over long distance.
  • Should not be brittles.

copper, aluminium, steel and steel coated aluminium, galvanized steel conductor are generally employed for this purpose.
