Step-up and Step-down Transformer

TRANSFORMER

The transformer is a static device which consist of two or more stationary electrical circuit interlinked by a common magnetic circuit for the purpose of transferring electrical energy between them. The transfer of energy one circuit to the another circuit without change in frequency.

Step-up Transformer

1.       A transformer that has more turns on the secondary than the primary side of transformer will increase the input voltage – This is called a step up transformer.

2.       It convert low voltage Ac into high voltage Ac. It increase the voltage.

3.       More current flow in primary coil Therefore one must used thicker wire in primary coil as compared to the secondary coil.

Step-Down Transformer

·         A transformer that has more turn on the primary that the secondary side of the transformer will decrease the input voltage – This is called a step-Down transformer.

·         It convert high voltage AC into low voltage Ac. It reduces the voltage.

·         More current flow in secondary winding coil. Therefore secondary winding will required thicker wire due to high current compared to primary coil.

The same transformer can be used as a step-up transformer or a step-down transformer depending on the way it is connected in the circuit.

When the transformer is used as a step up transformer, the low voltage winding is the primary.

In a step down transformer, the high voltage winding is the primary.

  # A transformer may receive energy at one voltage and deliver it at the same voltage. Such a transformer is called a one-to-one transformer. Such a transformer is used to isolate two circuit.
